Protein Extractors The protein skimmer works by fractionating the water and causes the protein or dissolved organic carbon waste (DOC) and fine particles, which are suspended in the water to be extracted in the form of foam.
This rises up in the reaction chamber and is collected in the top of the unit and discharged by the overflow.
The treated water then passes back to the pond via the water level control.
Like many Protein Skimmers that are pump fed - the water returning to the pond is by 'Gravity Drop' and therefore it is important, if the unit is to work, that it be placed higher than the pond water level.
It can be disguised quite easily, and even be hidden behind a bush or tree's, as long as the outlet pipe is still above the pond water level and can be extended if required if you site the Protein Skimmer any distance from the pond.
Pumps to Use:
It is recommended that pumps with a pumping capacity of between 3,000 and 4,500 Gallons should be used and that will have enough head pressure to power a Venturi.
If you use a larger pump then there is the danger that the unit will overflow as the return water can only take the maximum flow it is capable of coping with - you could of course if you are going to use a more powerful pump, valve it down prior to the water entering the protein skimmer. |
